I have a degree in Sociology from the University of Aberdeen. In 2017 I fulfilled some of my ambitions and taught English in China. After leaving China I travelled round Asia hooking up with various Childrens charities. By far the toughest conditions I faced was in Manila, Philippines. I learnt a few tough lessons about how some people are forced to live. Survival for some kids is a daily ritual of searching or begging for food.

SUNFLOWER STORYTIME!!....so...my first day in Manila and as I stayed in one of the poorest areas, Quiapo, I didnt have far to walk before coming across some of the 'street kids' living under the bridges and along the riverside. On spotting me crossing the bridge they came running towards me begging for money. I had been warned not to give money as it often went on drugs or to gang members. I refused, so one of the boys promptly climbed onto the bridge and balanced on a parapet threatening to jump the 80 feet into the fast flowing, heavily polluted river below. I held firm.

HE JUMPED ... Oh my God...what had I just done!...for the sake of a few pesos...turns out he was a seasoned professional!...and a very strong swimmer!...with no fear of heights!...and when he reached the riverbank he just looked up at me , waved,...and laughed.

Although initially relieved....I felt a sudden sense of anger and embarrassment that this guy had just used me as his daily source of entertainment!...How selfish am I ...

 

LESSON 1.....Egos and selfishness cannot exist here!...You wont survive

 

LESSON 2 was literally waiting for me just round the corner!!....
